After a successful hustings last night, Burns appears calm and confident. He discusses his successes as NUS President to save provisions for students and oppose tuition fees. He focuses on the idea that a union should be about its members, not about its leader. He goes on to say that NUS must work with all student groups to oppose fees. Their is a message of unification in everything he says.
Some at conference yesterday referred to this as an attempt to “please everyone”. Some have criticised Burns for being disengenuos and simply trying to say something to please everyone. This is an interpretation and his supporters say that Burns cannot suggest a message of unification without being criticised of trying to please everyone.
Burns is cut short for time. He does not get the chance to end on a powerful point. Still, the appluad from the crowd shows he has a lot of support.
